# Video Editor

> A real timeline for assembling, captioning, and rendering video

The **Video Editor** is a timeline. Bring in clips, arrange them, add captions, and render — the finishing step after generation.

## When to use it

Reach for the editor when you have footage and need precise control over timing.

## Projects

Work is organized into projects, each with a name, optional description, and thumbnail.

* **Create** a project and name it
* **Search** your projects by name
* **Open** one to edit
* Changes save as you work

## Editing

Inside a project you get a **timeline** where clips are arranged and timing controlled, plus tools to add clips, edit captions, and trim.

Source material comes from your generations and uploads in [My Assets](/assets) — generate in Pixio, then assemble here.

## Rendering

Rendering produces the final video file from your timeline.

  Rendering happens **in the app**. Headless renders, exports, and render progress aren't available through the API — you can build and edit a timeline programmatically, but the final render is app-only. See [what you can automate](/integrations/what-you-can-automate).

## Working efficiently

    Fixing a bad clip is a new generation, not an edit. Get the clips right before building the timeline around them.

    Everything on the timeline comes from your library — it's the staging area.

    Captions follow timing. Re-cutting after captioning means redoing them.

  <Step title="Render when you're done">
    Rendering is the commit step. Preview before you spend the time.

  Timeline project CRUD and validated editor operations are scriptable — only the render isn't. Useful if you want to construct a timeline from code and finish it in the app.
